Guru Nanak Dev University was established at Amritsar on November 24, 1969 to mark the 500th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. It is both a residential and an affiliating university. In conceiving the future course of the University, the objectives enshrined in the Guru Nanak Dev University Act 1969, emphasised that the new University would make provision for imparting education and promoting research in the humanities, learned professions, sciences, especially of applied nature and technology
University Grants Commission has granted “Category One” status to Guru Nanak Dev University, the only university to get this elite status in the region of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh. GNDU is a premier university of North India with a score of 3.85 on a 4.00 scale of NAAC and is accredited with A++ grade. It has also been conferred with the status of “University with Potential for Excellence” by UGC.
GNDU ranks among the Top Ten High Performing State Public Universities across India and continues to improve its NIRF rankings. It has been placed in top national and international rankings by NIRF, India Today, CWUR, Nature Index, and The WEEK-Hansa Research Survey.
Studies and research on the life and teachings of Guru Nanak, promotion of Punjabi language, and spreading education among educationally backward communities remain core commitments. Tuition fees for students of Guru Nanak Studies and Punjabi Studies have been waived to support this vision.
The University has made significant progress in disciplines such as Science, Arts, Management, IT, Industrial Technology, Environment, Planning, and Architecture.
GNDU caters to over twenty thousand students across its campuses and constituent colleges. It pioneered online admissions, online counselling, credit-based evaluation systems, computerized examinations, OMR-based assessments, and SMS-based result access in the region.
Spread across 500 acres, the University combines modern architecture with traditional values. With 35 academic departments, 148 affiliated colleges, and 71 associate institutes, GNDU has actively expanded into rural areas through regional campuses and rural colleges to uplift educationally backward communities.
GNDU has hosted prestigious national and international events, secured major research grants from apex bodies, established advanced scientific facilities, and achieved outstanding success in sports. The University has won the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy a record 23 times and consistently ranks among India’s cleanest campuses.
